PRIVACY & DATA

Privacy policy for Chatterift

Effective date: 31 October 2026 · Contact: privacy@chatterift.com

1. What Chatterift does

Chatterift is a Windows desktop tool that combines Twitch and YouTube livestream chat in one window. It lets you read messages, send and reply to chats, and optionally display chat in an OBS browser-source overlay running on your own computer. The core desktop chat service does not send your messages or OAuth tokens through a Chatterift-hosted chat relay.

2. Information accessed and why

With your permission, Chatterift accesses the connected livestream account's relevant channel and broadcast information, live-chat message text, the names of chat authors, relevant message IDs and the messages you choose to send. It uses this information to find an active livestream, combine the feeds, display messages, enable replies and send your chosen messages to the selected platform(s). Messages shown in chat may include information other users have posted publicly.

Chatterift uses the official Twitch and Google/YouTube authorisation flows, and does not ask for your account password. YouTube connection uses YouTube API Services and currently requests the Google OAuth scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube.force-ssl. This is a broad YouTube access permission, which is requested to support live-chat discovery, reading and posting; the app's intended use is limited to the chat functions described here.

3. YouTube ON, OFF and account removal

When you switch YouTube ON, Chatterift connects using an existing saved authorisation, or opens Google's official sign-in process when authorisation is required. Switching YouTube OFF stops the YouTube connection but keeps the saved Google authorisation so you can turn it back on later without signing in again. The ON/OFF preference is saved on your PC. Twitch has its own connection controls.

Removing a saved account is different from turning it off. The current development build's local-account-removal control deletes locally saved Google authorisation information, but does not yet send a token-revocation request to Google. To revoke Chatterift's Google access now, visit Google Account third-party access and remove the connection. We are developing in-app revocation before public release.

4. Where information is stored

Application preferences are stored locally on your Windows PC. In the current v0.9a YouTube connector, Google OAuth credentials are saved via Python keyring, using Windows credential storage when supported by your setup. Earlier builds stored these credentials in a local youtube_token.json file. The updated connector migrates a legacy file into credential storage and deletes the old file after saving succeeds; backup copies you have made are not automatically deleted. Twitch credentials are also handled locally. OAuth authorisation and chat data are not uploaded to a Chatterift user account.

Recent displayed messages are held in the app's in-memory chat feed during use; the interface has a Clear Chat option. The OBS overlay is served locally at 127.0.0.1. We do not currently offer a Chatterift-hosted cloud chat history. Final release logging, installed dependencies and storage behaviour will be reviewed before public distribution.

5. Sharing and visibility

Chat messages you send are transmitted to Twitch or YouTube, depending on your selected destination, and may appear publicly on the relevant platform. If you enable the OBS overlay and include it in a livestream or recording, displayed usernames and messages may be visible to viewers and retained in recordings. Twitch, Google/YouTube and OBS have their own terms and privacy practices. We do not sell Google API user data or use it for targeted advertising.

6. Data retention, deletion and your choices

Turning YouTube OFF does not erase your authorisation. Removing the locally saved login removes the connector's stored credentials, subject to any backups you made. Clearing the chat feed removes messages from the current app view, not from Twitch, YouTube, or existing livestream recordings. To revoke Google permissions, you can use Google Account third-party access. To request help with locally stored data or other privacy questions, contact privacy@chatterift.com.

7. Website information

The public Chatterift website is hosted on Cloudflare, which may process standard technical request information, such as IP addresses and browser request data, for delivery and security. Our contact addresses use Cloudflare Email Routing to forward messages to our support inbox. Emails you voluntarily send us contain the details you provide, and are used to respond to the enquiry. We do not currently offer website accounts or an online Chatterift chat archive. No advertising or behavioural analytics scripts are intentionally included in this website package.

8. Google and YouTube notices

Chatterift uses YouTube API Services. By using YouTube functionality you are also subject to the YouTube Terms of Service. See the Google Privacy Policy and the Google API Services User Data Policy (including Limited Use requirements). You can manage or revoke third-party access in your Google Account settings.

9. Updates and contact

We may update this page when Chatterift's features or data handling change. The published policy will be revised before public release if the final tested software behaves differently from the development build described above. For questions or deletion requests contact privacy@chatterift.com; for general help use support@chatterift.com.
